GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION:
The City of San Juan Capistrano's Elections are held in November of even-numbered years. The next General Municipal Election will be held on November 3, 2020. The City Clerk is the local elections administrator, and coordinates with the County of Orange to conduct General Municipal Elections.
The City of San Juan Capistrano has transitioned from at-large to by-district elections. City Council Members will be elected “by district,” instead of from across the city. For the November 3, 2020, General Municipal Election, members of the City Council will be elected from Districts 1 and 5. Please refer to the District Map to verify your district. Candidates must be registered voters and reside in either District 1 or District 5 in San Juan Capistrano.

Only the incumbent Sergio Farias was nominated for District 1. Pursuant to Section 10229 of the California Election Code, the City Council on August 18, 2020, canceled the General Municipal Election for District 1 and appointed Sergio Farias as Council Member to a four-year term, commencing on December 7, 2020.

The San Juan Capistrano ballot drop box located at La Sala Auditorium will begin accepting ballots on Monday, October 5.

The close of registration for the November 3, 2020, General Municipal Election is Monday, October 19, 2020. The Registrar of Voter's office will be open until 8:00 pm to provide voters the opportunity to register to vote and to obtain their ballots. Voters can also register online from this link:

CANDIDATE FILING PERIOD
Between these days (both days included), voters residing in Districts 1 and 5 may nominate candidates for election by signing a nomination paper. Each candidate shall be proposed by not less than 20 or more than 30 voters. Until 4:30 p.m. on August 7, or 5:30 p.m. on August 12 if the nomination period is extended, a candidate may withdraw the nomination paper after it is filed with the City Clerk. Only one candidate may be named in any one nomination paper for the District in which a candidate is running for office. No voter may sign more than one nominating paper for the same council office. Each Council seat is a separate office and the voter may sign nominating papers for up to (1) Council candidate.

CANDIDATE FILING PERIOD EXTENSION
Last day and hour for nomination papers to be filed with the City Clerk to nominate candidates other than the incumbent where nomination papers for an incumbent elective officer of the City were not filed.
ORDER OF NAMES ON BALLOT
The Secretary of State conducts a drawing of the letters of the alphabet constituting a randomized alphabet to be used in determining the order of all candidates on the ballot for each district.

Nomination papers may be obtained from the City Clerk, by appointment, during regular office hours.

VOTER REGISTRATION CLOSES
Final day to register to vote for the November 3, 2020, Election.
SECOND PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN STATEMENTS DUE
Last day for each candidate and each committee supporting or opposing a candidate or candidates to file campaign statements, with a closing date of October 17, 2020, with the City Clerk.
All Vote Centers will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 29 days before election day, Vote Drop-Off Boxes will be available; 4 days before election day, ALL Vote Centers will be open for in-person voting with extended hours; and 11 days before election day, selected Vote Center will be open with business hours.
ELECTION CERTIFIED AND ELECTED CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS SEATED
The City Council shall adopt a resolution citing the results of the election. The City Clerk shall immediately issue a Certificate of Election and administer the oath to each person elected. The City Council shall choose one of its members as Mayor and one as Mayor Pro Tempore.
